Please follow the following tips to progress in your educational achievements as youth Toastmasters:

Speaking spot is reserved as first come first serve.  However, the roles will be adjusted if we have noticed that you are speaking back to back in 2 weeks, especially when there are other members who haven’t spoken for a while requesting to speak. Please sign up for speaking spot at the most frequent only every other month. But in the mean time you can participate in other roles such as table topics, ah counter, wordmaster, grammarian, timer, ballot counter, Toastmaster of the Day (you have to have  attended at least 5 meetings and have done all other roles before signing up for TMOD), Topics master, Evaluator or General evaluator (General evaluator is only for more experienced members).

Signup sheet for roles –the signup sheet is usually distributed in our club meeting, or you can also sign up with me via email, so that I can update the signup sheet in google drive online. You can view what you have signed up for on the google drive shared only when you become a member.

Note: Open or blank spot means no one has signed up yet, please email me  if you want to assume any of these roles.

Roles: Try to sign up for different roles other than just speaking, as other roles are to practice your listening skills, leadership skills and evaluation skills as a youth member. If you do not have any roles assigned to you, please still make an effort to attend our meeting at least once a month, and you can be assigned topics speaker. This is how you can progress in Toastmasters.

SHOW UP: It is important as well that when you commit to a particular role/speaking spot, it is your responsibility to let me know if for some reason you cannot make the meeting “in advance”, instead of “no show” or on the day of the meeting, when your name is already on the agenda.

Timing:

Speech timing for all youths are 3-4 minutes (disregard what the CC manual states). Must speak for at least 2 min 30 sec and not more than 4 min 30 sec to qualify for best speaker vote. For advanced manual, the speech timing is the same at 3-4 minutes. Exception applies when a particular advanced manual calls for Q & A or Role play part–where the youth then will have additional 1-2 minutes for the role play part. Again, disregard the timing in the advanced manual as that is for adult group.

Evaluation timing for evaluators: 1-2 minutes (must speak for at least 1 minute to qualify and not more than 2 min 30 sec for best evaluator vote)

Table topics -or impromptu speaking: 1-2 minutes (must speak for at least 1 minute to qualify and not more than 2 min 30 sec for best topics speaker vote)

Full circle award:

November starts as new Gavel club year each year. In November, we will recognize Full Circle award, i.e. youth members who have done all roles in a meeting: ah counter, either word master  or grammarian, either timer or ballot counter, speaker, topics speaker, joke master, evaluator, Toastmaster of the year, and topics master. Be sure to do all these roles within one year and you will get your Full Circle achievement certificate.

Educational Awards: Our gavel club is an official Youth club recognized by Toastmasters International. Gavel Club participants become more confident public speakers and stronger leaders by working in the traditional education program. Gavel Club participants can work their way to the top of the communication track (Advanced Communicator Gold). However, they can only work up to Advanced Leader Bronze in the leadership track.

Manual: CC (Competent Communicator) manual and CL (Competent Leadership) manual are available electronically.  To be eligible to compete once a year on behalf of our gavel, club, you must have finished at least 3 (three) speeches in CC manual:

  • Project no. 1: Ice-breaker speech (introduce yourself to the group)
  • Project no. 2: Organize your speech (any topics)
  • Project no. 3: Get to the Point (any topics)

Note: Follow the project sequence. Don’t hop to project 2 before you even finished project 1.

Project evaluation sheet: Please bring your evaluation sheet (the last page on each attached file) for the project or bring your CC manual for your evaluator to evaluate you. Be sure to get the completed project evaluation sheet after the meeting so that you can get credit towards your Competent Communicator achievement. If you don’t have any record, you will have to deliver your speech again. Don’t lose the sheet—once your CC manual is received, immediately staple the first 3 projects’ completed evaluation sheet to your CC manual so that you can progress to the next project.

Mentor:  All senior members and club officers can also be the go-to person if you have questions regarding your roles, projects, etc. If you still have questions, please feel free to schedule a time by emailing one of the senior member, our club officers to go over any of the new roles with you especially when you are doing a role for the first time.
